about me
Belinda Whitta is a photographic artist, with a sustainable and alternative analog practice.
Frequently working within the intersectionality of feminisms, representation of land and body, and our contextual settler colonial histories and rituals.
Belinda facilitates a hands-on, process-based practice that feels out new ways to communicate the invisibilities or un-seen and un-spoken elements within our relationships, histories, representations and spaces.

the handmade darkroom: Te Whanganui-a-Tara Sustainable Photography Collective
The Handmade Darkroom was co-founded by Samson Dell and Belinda Whitta in February 2023, when the collective was publicly launched to facilitate a series of workshops. They have since spoken on panels, facilitated artist talks, and created and facilitated many workshops, including their debut workshops for the Susurrations exhibition, a cyanotype demonstration for Newtown Fest 2023 and Te Papa’s After Dark in March 2024, and their recent winter workshops in June/July of 2024.
Since 2023, The Handmade Darkroom have regularly collaborated with Women in Photography NZ & AU to facilitate monthly meet-ups for their local photographic community. Together with their community they formed a collaborative photobook made up of submissions from all over the motu, and beyond. The outcome, whispering bird song, will be available at Photobook NZ photobook fair in August of 2024.
The collective now facilitates a Patreon account, bringing monthly content to their supporters in return for financial support that enables the sustainability of the collective and the facilitators time and capacity to create new and meaningful content each month.
